This has happened many times to me; confused by the person in the mirror. It’s me, no doubt, but it’s not who I feel I am. In wanting to get to know this exterior me I have taken it upon myself to create a series of portraits that will take many years to execute. The plan is to create the 21 human facial expressions that psychologists says we are capable of. To do this, I’ll create 4 large portraits that together create an animation of each expression. In the end there will have been 84 self portraits made within the series.

Here's the latest expression, Happy.

This expression series is part of my Goodbye Art 2 series and each set of portraits is being systematically destroyed. When the 21st expression is created you will be asked to decide if the final expression should be destroyed or not. That is expected to happen some time in 2020.

Joyful Tune

I’ve always been drawn to photographs by Edward Curtis. I wanted to see if it was possible to create a skull chair that was satisfying to look at. I don't know why I became obsessed with it but I noticed that there were two types of skull chairs out there. One type had a skull on the back rest of the chair so when you sat in it you covered it up. The other had the face of the skull on the back of the chair so if you sat in it like a normal chair the skull was facing away from you and probably back against a wall. There were other variations but those were the main problems. So I started coming up with ideas.

The first step was to just do a ton of drawings of different options. I quickly noticed there weren't a ton of options and pretty soon I wanted to sit entirely in the skull. This lead me to a gamer style chair, low on the floor. After that it became a long game of designing it, figuring out how big it needed to be, making models and solving for x. Eventually I was able to get started. I decided to do many layers of 2x4's glued and screwed together. This was more approachable for me as I've worked in layers in other projects and I wanted to have a chunky fragmented look to the final piece.

The first few layers coming together. I'm trying to figure out how to get it done.

Here are the two middle sections. These were pictures that people took with the recently deceased and not in a coffin but they would dress up and pose the person. Kind of like a final way to remember them. Around that same time I would catch articles about the great barrier reef dying and other natural wonders disappearing. If that wasn't bad enough, I caught more articles about people taking vacations to these places with the goal of seeing them before they were gone. This seemed a bit much to me.

I thought about these two things and thought that recreating the death photos with sticks might make an interesting connection. I wondered if 100 years from now, people might look at us posing with dying and dead natural wonders and think of us as strange. Same as many of us view the idea of posing with the deceased.

I knew I wanted to work with sticks (when walking through a forest, sticks always felt like the bones of trees to me). I began to play around with different ways of using sticks. Eventually I found myself to the simple idea of just placing them on a canvas. I chose to sweep away the pictures when done because it seemed fitting for the series.

Thanks for reading,

Phil

Connect the Dots - Most. One held the kaleidoscope and the other held the camera. Got the kaleidoscope about an inch from the surface and began filming. I was surprised how much a physical kaleidoscope added to the visual.

1. The center is in focus and it gets blurry outside of that

2. The edges of the viewing area got darker

3. Because there's a glass ball in the tip of the kaleidoscope, everything is distorted.

All of these are not true with digital kaleidoscopes. Kinda interesting.

The video made me laugh because of a couple things.

1. First off, what is happening in real life is rarely translated to video. I was in a brightly lit room just putting odd shapes in front of the kaleidoscope and then throwing the paper away but the video is all ethereal and then punctuated with odd moments of showing the scene with a really odd zoom in.

2. Music.

Lastly, strangely enough, I couldn't find any video of someone drawing this way. Maybe it's too basic but it seemed interesting to me. It's was also an amazing amount of stories that went into it, over 600.

I found myself, as many people did over the last few years hearing about the war in Syria. I have always struggled (in a certain sense) to understand war as I've grown up without a war on our soil. It's difficult to imagine a military or other group coming through Minneapolis and just demolishing it. So as the news feed continuously put the Syrian war in front of me, the one story that struck me most was reading about Bana Alabed. She was a 7 year old girl that was live tweeting her war experience from Aleppo during the worst of the bombing. I remembered back to when I was 7, I was in first grade and my strongest memory was losing a lens from my glasses and the teacher recruiting everyone to help look for it.

I shared this experience and reflection with family and friends, which in my circle means that people will begin sharing their own stories. There's a pretty wide age range and so I heard 7 year old memories from the 4190's through the 2000's. I enjoyed the experience of hearing the memories and wanted to find a way to capture them. As you may have seen I enjoy doing really large scale handwritten artwork. So I set myself to task.

I spent about a year working on the project off and on. It occupied the studio a lot. The technique of making this text artwork was a little different than previous ones. Previously I spent a lot of time creating different shades with the text, spacing out the letters to create the variation. But this time I wanted the image to be very simple and stark. So I drew my image with very simple lines, translated it onto the wall and began filling it in.

One thing that I didn't know would be difficult was trying to keep the overall text to be the same shade as I worked my way across the picture. I had to keep referring to the first section I worked on to try to maintain that tone.

This project wasn't originally intended to be part of the Goodbye Art 2 series. It was my opus of 2017. But as I began the new series I realized that this was the type of project that should be part of the series. Something I thought shouldn't be destroyed.

If you'd like to see a tiny bit more about the project you can find a video about the book that came out of this project here on the blog as well.

When I was 7 (the book)

Being able to hear and share memories with people during the "When I Was 7" project was a meaningful experience. I drove out to his house and found him bored to death because he was taking some time off of work for a thrown back or a bum knee I don't remember. But he was chatty.

He showed me the guitar but wouldn't let me hold it. He pointed out some of the pieces on it that he had made, he was a machinist by trade and put his work into his passion. We talked for a bit, he found out I didn't play and was curious why I was buying the guitar. Think I said something about being an artist and am planning a project. He probably assumed I would paint on it.

The fella wouldn't let me buy it till I paid him for it, so we exchanged and I was on my way.

I have been wanting to smash a guitar and make a picture of Kurt Cobain for years. I grew up outside of Seattle, not far from where Kurt did. His music and story have been around my life for a long time. Needless to say when I finally got the guitar I was super excited. I had a few different ideas of how to approach the project but wasn't sure which would be executed. The one thing I wanted to do was film the whole thing in good ol Anaglyph 3D.

And I did film it all in 3D but then I found the 3D component to be distracting. This project wasn't about 3D it was about an amazing guitar getting destroyed.

So I went back to the footage, just now as typing this, and put this together. So if you have some Anaglyph 3D glasses put 'em on. The 3D is decent. There's an art to it and it beguiled and befuddled me.

I tried to find the contact info for the guy I bought the guitar from. Struggling to locate it. Anyway, have a good night

Something I’ve been messing with recently.

Automatic writing has always been interesting to me. Years ago I received an email from a fella who said he had a bunch of records in the garage he needed to get rid of (spouse was requesting) but he didn't want to just dump the records in the trash. He emailed and asked if I could find a way to use them. Naturally I said yes. Then a few weeks later boxes upon boxes of records show up at my door. He emailed and asked if I could find a way to use them. Naturally I said yes. Then a few weeks later boxes upon boxes of records show up at my door. I immediately felt worried that I wasn't going to be able to create something good enough to match his gift. So I sat on the records, literally and metaphorically. I sat and stared at them for what ended up being years. 6 years.

It got to the point where I couldn't bring myself to even look at the records. I felt bad at the money he spent. I felt bad that I hadn't used them. I felt embarrassed that I hadn't used them. I was ashamed I never had an idea good enough to make me use them.

This summer I was moving into a new studio space and again saw the records. I talked with some people about the records and they said "seems like the problem is all in your head" to which I replied "damn". They were right. I decided then and there I would make something and treat it like a normal endeavor. The results are what you find in the video above.

A point in a life

A while back I was looking in the mirror and was in that moment entertained looking at myself.
